What is home cooking worth in women’s softball?

As is typically the case in sports, in professional baseball the home team fares better than the road team when it comes to winning percentage. It doesn’t matter if it’s Major League Baseball (54.1%) or Japan’s Nippon League (53.3%), the home team is slightly more likely to win. But what about women’s softball?

I picked a random weekend in mid-April from last season’s D-I softball schedule. Mid-April was selected because teams are typically in conference play at that time and therefore are less likely to pad their schedule, which can happen during the non-conference season.

During the weekend of April 17-19 there were 399 D-I softball games. The home teams had an overall record of 213 wins and 186 losses (53.4%), which interestingly is right on par with men’s professional baseball.

The reason for the home field advantage in our sport? For that I’d recommend you pick up the book Scorecasting: The Hidden Influence Behind How Sports Are Played and Games Are Won.
